Our History
Humble Beginnings
Vertex Lubricants was founded in 1996 by Andrew Stewart under the name Lubricants New Zealand Limited. Originally focused on importing and selling racing fuel, Andrew’s deep passion for motorsport led him to expand into the lubricants market. Following an exhaustive global search for a reputable partner, Andrew secured the distribution rights for Elf Oil in New Zealand.
In a market traditionally dominated by large corporate brands, the establishment of an independent, privately-owned oil company was a bold move. For Andrew, it was an opportunity to break free from the constraints of a market controlled by a select few. His vision was simple but ambitious: to offer one of the most comprehensive product ranges in New Zealand, backed by genuine Kiwi passion, unwavering dedication, and exceptional technical support and customer service.
This vision proved to be a success, leading to substantial growth over the years. Today, Vertex Lubricants stands as New Zealand’s largest privately-owned independent oil company, with a nationwide branch network and a purpose-built 3,000m² head office and production facility in Takanini, Auckland.
Our Brand Evolution
In 2010, Elf Oil was acquired by Total. Although supply initially remained steady, it soon became evident that Total had no plans to further develop the Elf brand, leading to a gradual reduction in the product range and increased minimum order quantities that were unsustainable for the local market. In response, Andrew sought out new suppliers, and Vertex was born. By 2018, the Vertex brand accounted for 70% of the company’s business. Managing two brands became increasingly unnecessary and costly, prompting the decision to cease distribution of Elf Oil and move forward with the already successful Vertex name in 2021.
Vertex Today
Today, Vertex’s product range extends well beyond oil, encompassing grease, coolants, and a variety of workshop chemicals, making it one of the most comprehensive portfolios in New Zealand. The Vertex brand is registered with leading industry bodies, including the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), and holds numerous OEM approvals. We source our products from genuine top-tier manufacturers and blenders worldwide, ensuring superior quality through rigorous testing. While we do not blend oil locally, we import it in bulk and repackage it at our Takanini facility, maintaining control over the entire process and supporting local businesses through our packaging sourcing.

Environmental Responsibility
Recognising the environmental impact of waste disposal, Vertex Lubricants has taken proactive steps to offer recycling solutions for metal drums and plastic containers. We collect, clean, and repurpose drums, while used plastic containers are recycled into farming and infrastructure products through partnerships with specialised companies. Additionally, waste oil collected by various companies in New Zealand is repurposed for energy or used in road products like bitumen. These initiatives position Vertex Lubricants as a leader in environmental responsibility within our industry.
